Mayor Bates to Join Local Leaders in Announcing Effort to Provide Access to Health Insurance for Every Berkeley Child

Berkeley, CA –  Mayor Tom Bates will join school and community leaders at a press conference on Monday to announce an effort to provide access to health insurance for every child in Berkeley.  The plan includes a number of local efforts and support for the statewide Californians for Healthy Kids initiative.

Local efforts include programs like LifeLong Medical Care, a nonprofit health provider that receives funding from the City of Berkeley.  LifeLong has forty University of California, Berkeley, student volunteers that work to contact parents of uninsured children in Berkeley public schools to help them enroll in public health insurance programs.

The statewide effort is being spearheaded by Californians for Healthy Kids – a collaboration of the 100% Campaign (Children Now, Children’s Defense Fund, and The Children’s Partnership) and PICO California – in support of an initiative to provide health insurance to the roughly 1 million uninsured children in the state.  Proponents argue that this goal is within reach.  Over the last two years, the number of uninsured children in California decreased by nearly 500,000 due to the effectiveness of public insurance programs.

“With the support of statewide efforts like Californians for Healthy Kids and our local community agencies, we can provide access to health insurance for every Berkeley child,” said Mayor Tom Bates.  “On Monday, we will outline our commitment to reaching that goal.”
