Mayor
Bates and Pedro Noguera to Headline Symposium on Role of Cities in
Education The event,
which is sponsored by the UC Berkeley Center for Cities and Schools, will
take place on Friday, April 1 from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at UC Berkeley’s
Wurster Hall. Berkeley, CA –
Mayor Tom Bates will speak about leading a city to work more
closely with local K-12 schools at an symposium sponsored by the UC
Berkeley Center for Cities and Schools.
New York University Professor and noted public education expert
Pedro Noguera will join Mayor Bates in the discussion. Mayor Bates has made support for
Berkeley’s public schools one of his top priorities.
He convened a citywide summit with the school board president,
launched a major new summer literacy and health program for public school
children in south and west Berkeley, and expanded volunteer opportunities
for local residents and city employees to work with local youth, among
other efforts. “Our schools have a
responsibility to educate and care for our school during the school day.
But it is the responsibility of the entire community to protect and
enrich these young people on afternoons, weekends, and during the
summer,” said Mayor Tom Bates. “That
is a responsibility I take very seriously as mayor of this city.” Pedro
Noguera, a professor at New York University's Steinhardt School of
Education and director of NYU's Center for Urban and Global Education,
will talk about reclaiming the earlier promise of public education.
Noguera is former president of Berkeley Unified School District's board of
education and a former professor at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of
Education. WHO:
