Today, the City of Berkeley filed a
lawsuit against the University of California Regents in Alameda County
Superior Court challenging their approval of the UC Berkeley 2020 Long
Range Development Plan (LRDP) on the grounds that the environmental impact
report (EIR) is legally inadequate. The
City is asking the Court to invalidate the EIR and the Regents’ adoption
of the LRDP. This action
would stop all development under the LRDP – including the Tien Center,
Memorial Stadium, and other projects – until the University prepares an
adequate EIR. “This is already a densely built
city with tremendous traffic, parking, and other challenges.
The University’s plan to grow by 2.2 million square feet – more
than in the entire Empire State Building – will have a large impact on
everyone who lives, works, and visits here,” said Mayor Tom Bates. “The City must have a meaningful say in how, when and where
new growth occurs – particularly development that takes place off the
campus.” |
