Mayor to Cut Ribbon at Berkeley City Park Renovated
By Rotary Club
Berkeley, CA – With budget cuts
forcing the City to forgo much-needed renovations at Shorebird Park, more
than 60 volunteers from the Berkeley Rotary Club pitched in with time and
money to it fix up as a commemoration of Rotary’s 100th
birthday. On Wednesday afternoon, the Mayor will join with the Rotary
Club to “cut the ribbon” on the renovation at the much-loved Berkeley
Marina park. “Rebuilding Shorebird is on a
long list of City projects which we can only hope to get to,” said Mayor
Tom Bates. “The work done by the Rotarians would have cost the City
$250,000, money that’s hard to find in city budgets these days.
We can’t thank them enough for stepping up on this one.” “Rotary has a long tradition of involvement with our community, donating the Redwood Peace Grove in Tilden Park in 1955, the Berkeley Art Center in 1965, and made major contributions to the Library and YMCA,” said Rotary President Ed Church. “Shorebird was the perfect project to commemorate 100 years of service by Rotary International, since it involved a substantial cash donation and hands-on work by Rotarians over a period of many months.” The renovation included
building 18 new picnic tables and other equipment, replacing asphalt and
other walkways, and other efforts. What: Commemoration Event: Rededication of Shorebird Park Where: Berkeley Marina, University Avenue, Berkeley When: February 23, 2005, 1:00PM Who:
