Mayor Appoints Chair of Creeks Task Force

Helen Burke served four terms as an elected Board Member to EBMUD and worked for the EPA for 17 years as an environmental specialist.

Berkeley, CA – Mayor Tom Bates today appointed former East Bay Municipal Utility District Board Member Helen Burke to chair the Berkeley Creeks Task Force.  Earlier this month the Mayor appointed Jon Streeter, the former President of the San Francisco Bar Association, as his representative to the group charged with overhauling the City’s 15-year old creeks ordinance.

“I have no doubt that Helen will provide excellent leadership as the Task Force works to update and revise our creeks ordinance,” said Mayor Tom Bates.  “She has a track record of creating and implementing good public policy and bridging political divisions to create consensus.”

The Task Force will hold its first meeting on Monday, February 7th at 7 p.m.  The meeting will take place in the North Berkeley Senior Center at 1901 Hearst Avenue.  The Council directed the Task Force to create a work plan by the end of April 2005 and complete all its work by April of 2006.

Helen Burke – Chair of the Creeks Task Force

Helen Burke has a long history of government, environmental, and community work.  In 1974, she became the first woman elected to the East Bay Municipal Utility District Board.  She served four terms on the Board, which oversees the entire water and sewer system for much of the East Bay.  Ms. Burke, who has a Master’s Degree in City and Regional Planning from UC Berkeley, also worked for 17 years as an environmental specialist for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.  She was appointed to serve on the Task Force by the City’s Planning Commission, of which she is a member.

Jon Streeter – The Mayor’s Representative on the Creeks Task Force

Jon Streeter is a partner in the law firm of Keker and Van Nest in San Francisco and the past-President of the San Francisco Bar Association.  Recently, he worked pro bono to successfully defend the Berkeley Unified School District from a legal attack on their desegregation plan.  In addition, Jon has a culverted creek in the backyard of his home.
