UC Excludes City in Planning for Major New Campus Development

UC Berkeley’s long range development plan – approved less than two weeks ago – has no information on these projects, reinforcing City’s legal challenge to the plan.

Berkeley, CA -- Today, UC Berkeley announced detailed plans for a “sweeping new vision” of Memorial Stadium and the southeast corner of UC Berkeley.

“I am profoundly disappointed to report that this is the first time any City of Berkeley official has laid eyes on these plans,” said Mayor Tom Bates. “This announcement reinforces the City’s position that the new UC Berkeley Long Range Plan is deeply flawed and exists only to rubber stamp back room development plans.”

The City’s concerns can be summarized as follows:

First, the UC press release announces that the plan is “consistent with the goals of UC Berkeley’s Long Range Development Plan.”   However, the campus Long Range Development Plan – which was approved less than two weeks ago – includes no information about any of these projects.  In fact, the only mention of Memorial Stadium in the LRDP is a two sentence statement that there are no detailed plans.

Second, the extensive planning process undertaken by the University excluded the City’s elected officials, planning staff, and community representatives.  The campus reports that the plans were developed by the Memorial Stadium Advisory Committee – a group that included no City or community representation. At this point, the only information the City has is what was provided to the press this morning.

Third, the synopsis of the plan includes details on the projects, fundraising plan, and other elements of the proposal – but includes no provision for community involvement as the projects move forward.

The failure of the Long Range Development Plan to include specifics about this and other projects forms the basis for the City’s upcoming legal challenge to the University’s development plan.  The City is planning to file that lawsuit later this month.
