**Statement
from Mayor Tom Bates** Statement
from the Mayor: “Today,
the Grounds and Buildings Committee of the UC Regents voted to approve the
UC Berkeley Long Range Development Plan and provide campus officials with
a blank check to build 2.2 million square feet of new buildings in
Berkeley. Their approval came
despite strong opposition from a unanimous Berkeley City Council, 21
members of the State Legislature, the Sierra Club, representatives from
the Associated Students of UC Berkeley, community groups, and many others. I
join my colleagues on the City Council in expressing my disappointment
over this shortsighted decision. I
continue to believe that the outstanding issues can and should be resolved
through negotiations, however the City will now move forward with a legal
challenge as a last resort. To
that end, the City Council voted unanimously late this afternoon to
proceed with a lawsuit. Over the next few days and weeks, I will work to find an acceptable compromise with the University to avoid a costly and difficult trip to the courts. However, the City Council is united in its determination to see this through.” -- Tom Bates #
