Berkeley
Mayor Bates and City Council Members to Lodge Protest at UC Regents
Meeting San Francisco, CA – Berkeley
Mayor Tom Bates and Members of the City Council will hold a press
conference at UCSF's Laurel Heights Campus Tuesday, as the UC Board of
Regents Committee on Grounds and Buildings meets inside to consider a
controversial growth plan for the University of California, Berkeley.
Representatives from UC Berkeley’s student government, the Sierra
Club, and community groups will join in the press conference. City leaders will call on Regents
to delay action on the University's 2020 Long Range Development Plan and
require the university to negotiate in good faith with City leaders to
resolve questions about the 1,300 page plan, which the University only
made available for public review nine business days ago. The 15-year plan calls for 2.2
million square feet in new space – more than all the rentable office
space in the Empire State Building – but provides virtually no detail as
to where and when construction will occur or how traffic problems will be
mitigated. Last week, 22 state legislators
signed a letter to the Regents calling on the campus to better coordinate
growth issues with the City. What: Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates and City Council hold a news conference to protest proposed development plan for UC Berkeley. Where:
UCSF Laurel Heights Campus When:
Tuesday, January 18, 2005 PLEASE
