Berkeley,
CA – In response to
questions raised by the community, the City’s budget team is conducting
a benchmarking study to show how Berkeley stacks up against other cities
in terms of employees, budgets, and services.
The preliminary findings from this study were released earlier this
month by the City Manager.
The
results show that the City has significantly higher numbers of police
officers, fire fighters, and community resources like swimming pools and
senior centers than most of the other eight cities surveyed.
In addition, Berkeley’s budget is about average in the general
fund and “all funds” budget, which includes everything from publicly
owned utilities to airports. Lastly,
Berkeley came in a bit above average on the “residents per city
employee” comparison – with more employees than Fremont and Oakland,
but fewer than Palo Alto and Pasadena.
Out
of the nine cities in the City’s Comparison, Berkeley has:
- About average general
fund budget per resident
- About average total
budget per resident
- More firefighters per
resident than average
- More police officers
per resident than average
- More library branches
per resident than average
- More senior centers
per resident than average
- More public swimming
pools per resident than average
- More employees per
resident than the average
The
original data can be accessed on page six and seven of the City
Manager’s budget summary from the October 5, 2004, Council meeting
