Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates
joins ACTIA Board
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates was welcomed Thursday to the
governing board of the Alameda County Transportation Improvement
Authority.
Bates was nominated by the Alameda County Conference of Mayors, replacing
Alameda Mayor Beverly Johnson, who has served in the position for the last
year.
ACTIA is governed by an 11-member board of elected officials. Five are the
members of the Alameda County Board of Supervisors, and six are nominated
by the Mayor’s Conference.
The ACTIA Board oversees the expenditure of the Measure B half-cent sales
tax for transportation improvements throughout the county. The measure was
re-authorized for 20 years by 81.6 percent of county voters in the 2000
election.
The Measure B Expenditure Plan allocated approximately $2.4 billion to a
variety of specific road and transit capital improvement projects as well
as to the ongoing support of local street and road maintenance programs,
bus service operations, special transportation assistance for seniors and
people with disabilities, and bicycle and pedestrian programs.
"Without question, transportation issues are among the most important
facing the Bay Area,” Bates said. “I am looking forward to working
with my colleagues on ACTIA to improve our transportation infrastructure,
expand transit options, and create healthier communities."
Bates was sworn in as Mayor of Berkeley in December 2002.
His public service career has included four years as an Alameda County
Supervisor and 20 years as a California legislator representing Berkeley.
Tom Bates is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley where he
was a starting member of the 1959 Cal Rose Bowl football team. After
graduation, Bates served in Germany as a Captain in the U.S. Army
Reserves, and later worked in real estate.
Bates' mayoral agenda includes building additional housing for working
people along Berkeley’s transit corridors, and improving on Berkeley’s
environmental leadership.
During his two decades in the California Legislature, Bates played a
central role in framing California's progressive social service policy. He
consistently received a 100% pro-environment voting score. He authored
legislation that required transportation plans to include the use of
bicycles. He helped pass legislation to allow the development of transit
villages.
