ELEMENTARY
SCHOOL STUDENTS TO HELP MAYOR BATES REMOVE CONTAMINATION SIGNS – REOPEN
CREEK
On Tuesday,
May 4th, fourth and fifth grade students who led drive to have
creek cleaned up will assist in officially reopening Blackberry Creek in
Berkeley. Berkeley, CA – A group of
student leaders from Berkeley’s Thousand Oaks Elementary School will
assist Mayor Tom Bates and city staff as they remove the contamination
signs at Blackberry Creek and officially reopen it for public use.
Blackberry Creek runs through the school yard at Thousand Oaks
School. Last year, dozens of fourth and
fifth grade students from Thousand Oaks wrote to the Mayor and City
Council asking for the City to clean up the Creek, which had been closed
due to bacterial contamination. After
months of investigation, the City discovered the culprit – an old sewage
line nearly two blocks upstream. Last
month, Mayor Bates and Director of Public Works Rene Cardinaux visited the
school to report the findings. On Tuesday, May 4th at
12:30 p.m., students who helped lead the drive to clean up the Creek will
join Mayor Bates, and Rene Cardinaux, and Chief Environmental Officer Alex
Schnieder to remove the contamination signs and certify that the Creek is
open.
