BERKELEY PUTS CESAR CHAVEZ VALUES TO WORK WITH EVENTS AND COMMUNITY SERVICE INITIATIVES

City plans Cesar Chavez events through the next month and launches innovative new community service initiatives that reflect his values.

Berkeley, CA –  In addition to a series of celebrations and educational events being held throughout the city, Berkeley is celebrating the life and values of Cesar Chavez by inaugurating a number of new programs to make it easier for residents and city employees to serve their community.

On March 22nd, the City Council unanimously approved a contract with the Berkeley Alliance to match prospective volunteers with youth afterschool, recreation, and mentoring programs.  This community-based volunteer coordination, which is part of the Mayor’s Berkeley Champions for Kids initiative, will provide avenues for more residents to assist young people in the community.  Service to the community is one of the core Cesar Chavez values.

Earlier this year, Berkeley became the first city in the nation to adopt an employee volunteer release time initiative.  Also part of the Champions for Kids effort, City employees will be able to match their personal volunteer time with an equal amount of paid release time to volunteer with approved youth programs.  (More information on this program is available on-line at www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/mayor/PR/pressrelease012804.htm.)

“Cesar Chavez’s tireless fight for fairness and justice taught us all about the importance of serving our communities.  His legacy reaches beyond the improved working conditions for farmworkers and into the lives of our children and community today,” said Mayor Tom Bates. “These programs are part of the way we honor the life of Cesar Chavez.”

Cesar Chavez events will take place throughout the community through April.  They include events at all three Berkeley senior centers, story telling and poetry at city recreation centers, and many others. A list of events is available on the City’s website at www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/news/2004/03mar/033004cesarchavezcommemoration.html.
