UC
ANNOUNCES TEAM TO DEVELOP HOTEL IN DOWNTOWN; PROJECT TO COME THROUGH CITY
PERMIT PROCESS
Carpenter & Company chosen to lead development of Center and Shattuck site for new 175-200 room hotel and conference center. Berkeley, CA – University of California officials today announced that they have selected Carpenter & Company to develop a major new hotel and conference center in downtown Berkeley. The company pledged to work
closely with the Berkeley community and has agreed, along with the
University, that the hotel project will fall under the City’s land use
jurisdiction. This was an important change as the University had previously
asserted that, as a University-related facility, the project would be
exempt from the City’s land use laws. The proposed project, which is
still in the preliminary stage, would transform the block where Shattuck
meets Center Street. In
addition to the 175-200 room hotel and conference center, the complex may
later include the new home for the Berkeley Art Museum, Pacific Film
Archive, and the Hearst Museum of Anthropology.
Those museums are planned to follow at least two years behind the
construction of the hotel. “This project has the potential
to be a showcase project that will bring excitement and vitality to our
downtown,” said Mayor Bates. “I am pleased that an experienced
developer team is on board and I look forward to working with the
University, Carpenter & Company, and the community as the City’s
planning process begins.” As a first step, the development team will begin a six-month feasibility study on the prospects for the new hotel complex. #
