VISTA
COMMUNITY COLLEGE AND CITY REACH AGREEMENT ON PARKING – CONSTRUCTION OF
NEW CAMPUS TO BEGIN
College District to provide $3.6 million to the City to mitigate impact of the increased parking and traffic related to the new downtown campus. Berkeley, CA – Clearing the last
remaining hurdle prior to construction, Peralta Community College and the
City of Berkeley reached a tentative agreement for the College system to
pay $3.6 million to the City to mitigate the parking and traffic impact of
the new campus. With construction poised to begin
on the College’s new Center Street campus, the parking issue had become
a stumbling block. However,
Peralta has agreed to place the entire parking mitigation fund in an
escrow account until the City puts forward a final plan on how the money
will be utilized. A portion of the parking
mitigation fund may be used to help rebuild the seismically unsafe
downtown Berkeley “City Center” parking garage as well as provide
better access to transportation alternatives. “The new Vista campus will be an
important addition to our downtown – opening educational doors for our
residents, providing conference space, and bringing vitality to the entire
area,” said Mayor Tom Bates. “But it was absolutely essential for the
City be compensated for the additional parking and traffic congestion
created by this new campus. With this agreement in place, I feel very comfortable moving
forward.” “With
this agreement, we can break ground on the new campus in a matter of
days,” said Peralta Community College District Trustee Darryl Moore.
“I think this shows that the City and the Peralta Colleges are
working as partners on Vista College and that we are committed to being a
good neighbor in the downtown.” #
