Statement from Mayor Tom BatesMAYOR
REQUESTS CITY COUNCIL WITHDRAW PROPOSAL FOR PARCEL TAX INCREASE
“I have had discussions with
many people in this community about the budget crisis facing the City.
While residents are worried about cuts to important city services,
they are also reluctant to add to the tax burden faced by Berkeley
property owners. Over the past several weeks, I
heard from members of the public, neighborhood groups, unions, and others
that the tax measure does not enjoy the support necessary to achieve a
two-thirds majority in the March election. Therefore, I am asking my
colleagues on the City Council not to place the proposed parcel tax on the
March ballot. If the City Council agrees and
this measure is withdrawn, we will face very difficult decisions as we
work to balance our budget. Without
question, we will be forced to make significant cuts in services and
tighten our belt wherever possible. We are facing difficult times, but I am confident that – by working together – we will meet the challenges ahead.” #
