MAYOR’S
YOUTH AND EDUCATION EFFORTS GET $20,000 BOOST FROM SBC GRANT
SBC
Foundation grant will fund coordinate City, school district, and Berkeley,
CA – The SBC Foundation has provided a $20,000 grant to fund a key
component of Mayor Tom Bates’ efforts to coordinate City, school
district, and community youth and education programs. The SBC funding will enable the
school district – in partnership with city and community-based agencies
– to establish a program to connect public school children and their
families to available social and health services.
The program will include training and coaching school site
administrators and staff, teacher release time, and the design of a data
base system. The grant will be formally
presented at the City Council meeting at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday night.
The Berkeley Alliance – a formal partnership among the City of
Berkeley, Berkeley Unified School District, UC Berkeley and the broader
community – will officially accept the money. “SBC is proud to be a part of
the Mayor’s Youth and Education Summit effort to bridge support services
to Berkeley’s children,” said Barbara Leslie, SBC Director of External
Affairs. “These funds will enable the school district, the City, and the
community to work together to provide needed services to Berkeley’s
families.” Last March, the mayor and school
board president Joaquin Rivera co-hosted the Berkeley Youth and Education
Summit Kick-off, where 165 people came together to develop strategies to
better support Berkeley’s Youth. Responding
to the consensus of the summit to “improve service coordination,
cooperation, and cohesion,” the Mayor’s Office worked with BUSD and
the Alliance to develop a proposal to SBC. “We have been working hard to develop a collaborative model that is centered in meeting the needs of the students,” said Mayor Bates. “With the funding from SBC, we can now move this effort from planning to action.” # # #
