representatives on November 20th. Berkeley, CA – Mayor Tom Bates will launch a major
effort to bolster Berkeley’s “green” economy in a speech to over 150
Berkeley-based green business owners and representatives on November 20th.
In his
speech, Mayor Bates will outline a series of proposals to stake
Berkeley’s claim as the most environmentally friendly city in the
country. "We
are proud of the more than 100 green businesses already in Berkeley, but
we are just getting started. When
people think of green business and green buildings, I want them to think
of Berkeley," said Mayor Bates. “Not only will this help our
economy, our environment, and the business community, but it will makes
Berkeley a world environmental leader. The
Mayor’s proposals include building the world’s first
“platinum”-rated green building at Oxford and Kittredge, launching a
new effort to attract new start-up environmental and technology companies
to Berkeley, creating a new Environmental Services Director, obtaining
green certification for all City of Berkeley operations, and creating a
Mayor’s Green Business Work Group to develop green-business friendly
policies. Berkeley has
already shown regional leadership in both the green building and green
business sectors. The
Office of Economic Development provides “eco-businesses” with
assistance to expand their markets and helps citizens find green products
and services. A recent survey found 143 eco-businesses in
