Berkeley, CA – Mayor Tom Bates will launch a major effort to bolster Berkeley’s “green” economy in a speech to over 150 Berkeley-based green business owners and representatives on November 20th.

In his speech, Mayor Bates will outline a series of proposals to stake Berkeley’s claim as the most environmentally friendly city in the country.

"We are proud of the more than 100 green businesses already in Berkeley, but we are just getting started.  When people think of green business and green buildings, I want them to think of Berkeley," said Mayor Bates. “Not only will this help our economy, our environment, and the business community, but it will makes Berkeley a world environmental leader.

The Mayor’s proposals include building the world’s first “platinum”-rated green building at Oxford and Kittredge, launching a new effort to attract new start-up environmental and technology companies to Berkeley, creating a new Environmental Services Director, obtaining green certification for all City of Berkeley operations, and creating a Mayor’s Green Business Work Group to develop green-business friendly policies.

Berkeley has already shown regional leadership in both the green building and green business sectors.   The Office of Economic Development provides “eco-businesses” with assistance to expand their markets and helps citizens find green products and services.  A recent survey found 143 eco-businesses in Berkeley.
