MAYOR
BATES TO LAUNCH HEALTH SERVICES TASK FORCE
Health care
leaders to join in creating recommendations for the $16.7 million Berkeley
spends on mental health and public health care services every year.
Berkeley, CA – With the goal of
developing a
coordinated citywide vision for health and health services in Berkeley,
Mayor Tom Bates will launch a Health Services Task Force on Wednesday,
October 22nd. The
Task Force, which will be made up of experts in mental, physical, and
community health services, will meet semi-weekly to develop a set of
concrete recommendations for the Mayor. Berkeley
is one of only three California cities to operate its own Health
Department, putting it on the front lines of health care services for the
community. A distinguished
group of leaders from the City’s Health Department and other community
health providers – including Alta Bates-Summit Medical Center, Kaiser
Permanente, Children’s Hospital, UC Berkeley, Lifelong Medical, and
others – will serve as members of the Task Force.
Berkeley residents Dr. Wendel Brunner, Director of Public Health
for Contra Costa County and Roberta Brooks, Chair of the South and West
Berkeley Health Forum, will serve as co-chairs. “Berkeley
spends over $5.2 million of the city’s general fund, which leverages
another $11.5 million a year in state and federal funds, on public health
and mental health programs. This
Task Force will help us effectively target those city resources and bring
in vital partnerships with the other providers in our city,” said Mayor
Tom Bates.
