BAY AREA LEADERS TO GATHER FOR PUBLIC SAFETY SUMMIT

Mayors, legislators, police chiefs, social service and education officials plan cooperative strategies to improve public safety during these times of budget cuts.

Berkeley, CA – Top leaders from throughout the Bay Area will gather on Friday, October 17th to share strategies for improving public safety throughout the region.  With violence on the upswing and fewer resources available, leaders and policy experts will discuss the impact of state funding cuts, and identify regional strategies make our communities safer.

Summit attendees include Assembly Members Loni Hancock and Mark Leno, Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates, Richmond Mayor Irma Anderson, Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia, Alameda County Supervisor Nate Miley, Oakland Police Chief Richard Word, and others.

“Crime and other social problems do not respect city and county borders. We cannot solve these problems alone,” said Mayor Tom Bates.  “This summit will highlight our cooperative accomplishments so far, and look to ways to improve our work in the future.”

"In these tough economic times, we must develop smart regional plans to prevent crime and violence," said Assemblywoman Loni Hancock, Chair of the East Bay Public Safety Corridor.
