BERKELEY AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS TO HOLD ‘LIGHTS ON AFTER SCHOOL!’

After school programs throughout the City join nationwide effort.

Berkeley, CA -- Mayor Tom Bates and School Board President Joaquin Rivera invite the community to join Berkeley’s After School programs during the Lights on Afterschool! rally on October 9th at 5 p.m.   Berkeley’s event will be one of more than 5,000 such events around the country.

Each site will showcase after school programs and highlight the danger posed by budget cuts.  Participants in the Lights On Afterschool! rally include City Council Members, School Board Members, local educators, business leaders, parents, children, and community members.

The event will highlight three of the significant contributions that after school programs make to Berkeley: keeping kids safe and healthy, helping them learn, and relieving working parents of worries about their children's activities during the afternoon hours. Hundreds of parents, supporters and community members are expected to attend.

WHAT:           Berkeley Lights On Afterschool! Kick-off Event

WHEN:           5 PM, October 9, 2003
