OVER 50 LEADERS ATTEND LAUNCH OF MAYOR BATES’ NEW UC/CSU HOST CITY PARTNERSHIP Mayors, council members, and city managers from cities that host state university campuses gathered in Sacramento for first meeting. Sacramento, CA –
At the request of Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates, over 50 mayors, council
members, and city managers from around California met earlier today in
Sacramento to launch a new UC/CSU Host Cities Partnership. The
newly formed Partnership will meet regularly to help cities develop
strategies on land use, transportation, economic development, housing, and
other issues. “We
found that we all face similar challenges and opportunities – from
traffic jams to economic development,” said Mayor Tom Bates.
“By agreeing to work together, we took an important step towards
a healthier relationship with our local universities and towards
reexamining the century old relationship between campuses and cities.” The
meeting, which was co-hosted by the League of California Cities and
Riverside Mayor Ron Loveridge, showcased Mayor Bates’ efforts to use his
20 years of experience and contacts as a state legislator to address
problems faced in University communities like Berkeley. The
meeting included discussions on both the legal relationship between
campuses and their host cities as well as innovative ways that cities have
worked with their campuses. Mayor
Bates shared some recent successes in Berkeley, including the recent
passage of a joint city/UC land use plan for the south side of campus and
Berkeley’s ongoing study of the costs of providing city services to the
university. The Partnership will meet later this year to begin project work. #
