MAYOR’S
HOUSE TO GET ENERGY ‘RETROFIT’ FROM BERKELEY TEENS
Berkeley
High School students have retrofitted over 1000 Berkeley homes. Berkeley,
CA – Mayor Tom Bates will receive a home energy retrofit from a unique
Berkeley youth program on Wednesday, August 20th.
“The
blackouts last week and California’s continuing energy problems are a
stark reminder that we all need to pitch in and save energy,” said Mayor
Tom Bates. “I hope this retrofit will bring attention to a wonderful
Berkeley program that teaches young people the value of reducing energy
use and provides an important free service to our community.” For
the past three years, California Youth Energy Services (CYES) has trained
and employed Berkeley teens to perform free residential energy retrofits
to Berkeley residents. On
Wednesday, two Berkeley High School students will install new light bulbs,
low-flow showerheads, weather stripping, and other energy saving devices
in the Mayor’s home. This will be their last retrofit of the summer and
will celebrate another successful year for the program. In
the past three summers, CYES has employed over 60 Berkeley High School
students and retrofitted over 1000 homes and 15 homeless shelters.
Not only does the average household save $200 a year in utility
bills, but these retrofits save nearly 800,000 kWh of electricity per year
and 185 tons of greenhouse gasses. The
City of Berkeley and the East Bay Municipal Utility District funds the
program, which is run by the Rising Sun Energy Center. WHAT:
