CEREMONY
TO HONOR BERKELEY AS ONE OF BEST IN U.S. FOR BLIND PEOPLE The American Foundation of the Blind (AFB) will present Berkeley with its “2003 AFB Livable Community Award” at beginning of City Council meeting on July 8th. Berkeley, CA – The New York
based American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) will present the City of
Berkeley with a “2003 AFB Community Award” at a City Council ceremony
on Tuesday evening. Mayor Tom Bates will accept the award on the city’s behalf. The award recognizes cities and towns in the United States that have developed solutions for facilitating the participation of blind or visually impaired people in community activities. Berkeley will be honored with the AFB Livable Community Award for its excellent public transportation, the “walkability” of the city, a record of hiring people with sensory disabilities, and the general integration of blind residents into the community, among other features. Berkeley was one of only five cities in the country to win this award. “We are honored to be recognized by AFB as one of
the most livable cities in the United States for people who are blind or
visually impaired,” said Mayor Tom Bates. “Berkeley has a long and
