BERKELEY
NOW RUNNING VEHICLE FLEET ON VEGETABLE OIL
Berkeley is
the first known city of its size to completely convert to biodiesel. Mayor
Tom Bates will join in celebration of this environmental milestone. Berkeley,
CA – Mayor Tom Bates will join City Council Members, city staff, and the
community to celebrate the successful transition of nearly all of its 200
diesel vehicles to biodiesel. Biodiesel – which is comprised of vegetable oil – has less than half the emissions of regular diesel fuel. It can be produced from recycled vegetable oil and is far safer to transport, store, and use because it is not a hazardous material. It also reduces our dependence on petroleum oil. “Once
again, Berkeley is demonstrating environmental leadership,” said Mayor
Tom Bates. “We are making
our city cleaner and healthier, while showing the world that this
technology makes sense – environmentally, financially, and
technically.” Currently,
over 90% of the city’s vehicles have been converted to biodiesel.
The remaining 10% are Fire Department vehicles that will be
converted as soon as accommodations are made for delivering biodiesel to
fire stations throughout the city. WHAT:
