UPDATE ** UPDATE ** IMMINENT WAR FORCES POSTPONEMENT OF MAYOR BATES’ PLAN TO GO HOMELESSMayor still
to hold town hall meeting with homeless community at 3:30 pm on Wednesday.
Homeless night now rescheduled for April 22nd. Berkeley, CA – With a war in
Iraq looming in the next few days, Mayor Tom Bates and representatives
from the homeless community have postponed the Mayor’s homeless night. The ultimatum given by President
Bush during Monday night’s address will expire on Wednesday afternoon,
just as the Mayor’s homeless night was set to begin.
With the attention of the world focused on Iraq and the Mayor’s
responsibilities to the city in times of crisis, it was jointly decided to
reschedule most of the planned events. Mayor Bates will still meet
with members of the homeless community at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday at MASC
(Veterans Building basement, 1931 Center Street) to discuss homeless
services, the war, and other issues.
The media is invited to attend the event.
The Mayor also plans to visit with homeless people on the streets
at 9 p.m. that evening (at Adeline and Shattuck). “One of the terrible
consequences of this war is that it turns our attention away from the
problems we face here at home. We
have casualties of neglect in Berkeley and throughout our country,” said
Mayor Bates. “But it does
not seem possible to have a conversation about our homeless crisis at the
moment our country goes to war.” The tentative new date for
homeless night is April 22nd.
Further information will be provided in the next couple of weeks. #
