MAYOR BATES AND CITY
COUNCIL FUND EMERGENCY WINTER SHELTER BEDS
Berkeley, CA – Last
evening, the Berkeley City Council helped fund two emergency winter
shelters for homeless people in the city.
The first shelter, which is already open, will provide beds for
young women and their children. A second shelter for young men is scheduled to open soon.
Both shelters are the
work of the Youth Emergency Assistance Hostels (YEAH). On its own initiative, YEAH found shelter locations in
churches, mobilized volunteers, and brought in donations to get their
program up and running. Last
night, the City Council provided $10,000 to leverage the work already done
and allow the group to open the second shelter for young men.
“This is a wonderful
example of the Berkeley community coming together to help people in
need,” said Mayor Tom Bates. “YEAH
brought together churches, community members, and the City to help get
young people off the streets and give them a warm, safe place to sleep.
I am very pleased that the Council was able to help this group
bring people out of the rain.”
Both shelters are
scheduled to operate through March of this year.
