City Council

The Latest News from the Mayor's Office:

Berkeley Takes Another Step Toward Solar
The City of Berkeley took another step forward today in bringing more solar energy to Berkeley. Initially proposed by Council Member Dona Spring and passed by the Berkeley City Council, the City now waives the building permit fees for solar installation on single-family homes. The Council allocated an initial $25,000 to cover the fees, which range from $100 to $200 per residence.

36 Hours in Berkeley
The New York Times turned their spotlight on the treasures of Berkeley with a full page spread in the March 30, 2008 Travel section. Joshua Kurlantzick takes readers on a tour with photos and eloquent descriptions of Berkeley's diverse attractions including Telegraph Avenue, Fourth Street, Indian Rock and the Farmers' Market. Read the article 36 Hours in Berkeley.

David Brower Center Construction Well Underway
On February 25th, Mayor Tom Bates toured the construction site of the greenest building ever built in Berkeley -- the David Brower Center.  The Brower Center will be the home for environmental organizations and businesses and a world center for environmental activism.  It is being built jointly with the Oxford Plaza apartments, 97 units of workforce and affordable housing.

Statement from Mayor Bates on the Marine Recruiting Station
"I have heard from people all over the country regarding the action taken by the Berkeley City Council regarding the Marines recruiting center.  Let me be absolutely clear that this is not about the men and women who are serving our country in our armed forces.  I am a former U.S. Army Captain and I respect the choice of those who are serving our country. However, this community strongly opposes the war in Iraq and the foreign policy of the current administration."
