Summer Programs with the Shorebird Park Nature Center and Adventure Playground

Registration for summer Marine Biology and On the Water classes  is  March 22 . 2008   Starting at 9:30 a.m.in the office at the Shorebird Park Nature Center- 160 University Ave. Berkeley Marina, 94710   ( see directions above)
  Come with emergency  contact numbers and be prepared to sign the forms and waiver for your child. (You cannot sign up your friend's children.) Bring exact change or a check- We do not take credit cards, and we do not have change. After  March 20, 2008 Check this web site- it will be updated regularly.  Call 510 981-6720 and see if there is space still available.

Full day program options
for children 7 years or older. Enroll your child in Marine Biology or Boating for 1/2 day and Adventure Playground for the other half. Best for children who are self motivated. Children must be picked up by 4:30 p.m. The fee for full day option children to stay in the playground without adult company is $7.00  per child each day. 
Marine Biology
Classes are held in the Nature Center. Hands-on exploration of the rocky shore, dock and pier habitats. Use of microscopes and marine sampling equipment will help us identify local  invertebrates as well as vertebrates. Session 1 Marine bio is 8 days and includes field trips to the Albany shoreline and a research boat trip.

On the Water Classes 

Children must be 9-16 years old, and have a current 2008 proof of swim ability of at least a  low level 4 from a certified Water Safety Instructor. All children will wear personal floatation devices  we provide and will be supervised by leaders with a Red Cross and C.P.R. certification. Here is the swim form for this program.

  • The Boating Program -1p.m.-4p.m. 
    This is an on the water experience. We learn to canoe, kayak, go out on a research vessel and sail    Limit 15.

  • Canoeing  -  10a.m.-12 p.m. 
     
    Learn basic canoeing skills, paddling strokes to canoe over canoe rescue. Limit 10.

  • Water skiing - 10-2 p.m. Basic learn to ski in Aquatic Park.  Limit 15.

Adventure Playground 

Summer Hours:
    
June 16th- August. 15th, 2008
Monday-Friday                9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday   11 a.m.-5 p.m.

If you would like to leave your child (7 years or older child ) in the playground for up to 3 hours, you need to have a current registration form on file. Here is the form. Once the form is on file you sign your child in  at the front desk. Your child is then available for the Marina Adventures programs below.

Groups of 5 or more children need prior reservations,  please call three weeks or more ahead, dates fill fast. See group information on the Adventure Playground page

 Marina Adventures Summer Programs in Adventure Playground 

Each of the programs listed below are offered on a drop-in basis, from 1-2 hours each day. Sign up in the Adventure Playground on the day of the program, 1/2 hour before it starts. ALL PROGRAMS ARE FREE.  Children under seven years must be accompanied by an adult. NO GROUPS. Limited participants and age restrictions may apply to specific activities.  Great fun! 

Our fun summer programs offered by Adventure Playground staff are: 

  • Free play- all the time! Children can choose to use hammers nails and saws to build and create their own playground. Programs are offered for children not in groups.

  • Fishing Mondays 2:30-4 p.m. and Tuesdays 10:30-12. Limit 15 kids. We provide the drop lines and bait and fish off the Berkeley Pier. All fish or crabs that are caught are released.

  • Creative Building Wednesdays, 2:30-4 p.m. Classes include: tool workshop , building wooden animals, model cities, race cars and more. Pick up our calendar  when you come in. Check this link for pictures of a fort building activity

  • Crafts Thursdays 2:30-4 p.m. Classes include making instruments, mobiles,  sun prints and more. 

  • Special Activities  Fridays 2:30-3:30 Join the fun, Mud day, Egg drop,  Treasure Hunt , other activities may include cook-outs, wet + wild, bubble festivals, Nature Exploration and more etc..) 

JOB OPENINGS FOR  FALL  POSITIONS - DESCRIPTION and application   
$15.17 per hour 
Would work on weekends,  must have at least two years experience working with children, and or a specialized talent working with carpentry. Job is out of doors, fun in the sun. Down load the application here or please call  for an application to be mailed to your home.
