OFFICE OF THE DIRECTOR Department Director: Fred Medrano
Berkeley’s Department of Health and Human Services has provided essential community services to Berkeley residents for over one hundred years! Today HHS is a large municipal department with more than four hundred employees who provide a broad scope of direct services in numerous locations throughout the City of Berkeley. A number of related services are also provided through contracts with community agencies in Berkeley. The Department is organized into five operating divisions: Public Health, Mental Health, Environmental Health, Seniors, and Employment Programs - and one administrative division. The Office of the Director provides oversight and direction over all departmental activities. The Department’s mission is "to improve the quality of life for individuals and families in the City of Berkeley through innovative policies, effective services and strong community partnerships." To achieve this goal, we place a high value on developing an integrated service delivery approach based on internal departmental teamwork, interdepartmental coordination, and the formation of strong working alliances with community agencies and neighborhood residents. The HHS Department is known for its innovative programs and its long-standing commitment to community service. I would like to personally invite you to tour our website and to make this information a part of an enriched and healthy experience in the City of Berkeley. Fred Medrano, Director |
