Preliminary Matters

 

1.       Roll Call

Meeting called to order @7:10pm.

Present:  B. Gilbert; S. Hicks-Kilday; R. Kilday-Hicks; R. Kaufman; E. Monk-Hallberg; N. Smith

Absent:  R. Folberg; M. Id-Deen

     Staff: D. Geiken

 

2.       Announcements

Chairperson Kilday-Hicks welcomed Councilperson Wozniak appointee, Robert Kaufman.

 

Staff provided update re: Hurricane Katrina Relief efforts @ City Center, First Source is assisting evacuees with job placement activities.

 

Monk-Hallberg announced next Honda dispute potluck is cancelled, in order to collaborate with & to participate in San Francisco March on September 24.

 

 

3.       Public Comments

The public may comment about any item not on the agenda.  Public comment regarding agenda items will be heard while the Commission is discussing the item

 

     None

 

4.       Approval of July 7, 2005 minutes

M/S/C to approve minutes carried over to next meeting, not enough members present who were also present at July meeting.

 

Old Business

 

5.       Claremont Hotel labor dispute – Information and Action

          No new information.

 

6.       Workplan review including Labor Bill of Rights – Information and Action

No action at this time.  Need to develop language to include Equal Benefits Ordinance, Healthcare, Living Wage Ordinance, Workplace Bullying, anti-sweatshop procurement and alternative economic models.

 

7.       Minimum Wage – Information and Action

          Assembly Bill 48 on Governor’s desk.  No action at this time.

 

8.       Workplace Bullying – Information and Action

Public comments by:  Elaina Rose Lovejoy, Ph.D. & William Lepowsky, M.A.   Additional written information was provided including information prepared by Rhea Settles M.Ed.

M/S/C (Hicks-Kilday, Kaufman) to 1) explore proclamation by Councilperson Worthington (N. Smith for follow-up), 2) meet with City Attorney re: guidance on policy for possible laws/procedures, 3) promote public media attention (guests encouraged to prepare letters for publication in newspapers), 4) promote education session w/ public, 5) keep Workplace Bullying on future agendas.

Ayes: Unanimous; Absent: R. Folberg, B. Gilbert (departed early), and M. Id-Deen.

           

New Business

 

9.       Berkeley Honda Labor Dispute – Information and Action

Monk-Hallberg provided update, most recent negotiation was cancelled, no future date scheduled.  Rally organized by Monk-Hallberg on September 17, 2005 was well received.

 

10.      Develop agenda for October 19th meeting – Information and Action

          Carry over all times

Employment Development Department August 2005 Unemployment Data for Alameda County.
