Bulky Waste Pick-up Guidelines
The City of Berkeley offers 1 Bulky Waste Pick-up per calendar year for single-family homes and multi-unit residential buildings up to 4 units. Advance appointments are required, and must be scheduled by the property owner. Appointments can be made for a Tuesday or Thursday throughout the year.
To participate in the Bulky Waste Pick-up Service:
- Your Pick-up date can be scheduled for a Tuesday or Thursday throughout the year (unless this is a refuse collection holiday).
- The property owner must make the appointment for the Bulky Waste Pick-up. Please call Customer Service in advance of your preferred date, and no later than 2:00pm on the business day before:

- If you forget to put out your items on the day of your appointment, you will have to wait until next year for another appointment.
Quantity Limit: The maximum amount of trash per residence is 3 cubic yards. This is the equivalent of 20 large (32-gallon) garbage bags. If your material exceeds this limit, you may be charged a fee for the additional amount.
Appointment Day: Set out materials for pick-up by 7:00 am on your pick-up appointment day. Do not set out material more than 1 day ahead of your pick-up appointment.
Extra Trash & Plant Debris: can be picked up throughout the year by purchasing pre-paid bags for a small fee. Bags are available at City libraries and at the Transfer Station on 2nd Street. Contact Refuse Customer Service for more information.
Materials & Items Acceptable for Pick-up
Trash:
- Bulky household items
- Trash
- Doors cut in half at width
- Rugs rolled at 5' lengths up to 12" diameter
- Painted wood, plywood, composition board up to 5'
- Small appliances
- Sinks and toilets
- Bed frames
- Mattresses
- All small items must be boxed or bagged
These Items Are NOT Acceptable for Pick-up

- No large appliances
- No items longer than 5' or heavier than 50 pounds (sofas and mattresses okay)
- No recyclables (please use blue cart for weekly curbside recycling collection)
- No plant debris or food waste (please use green cart for weekly collection, or purchase excess plant debris bags)
- No rocks, dirt, or concrete
- No tires or auto parts
- No televisions or computer monitors
- No hazardous waste
