The Recreation Division is looking for caring and enthusiastic Berkeley Day Camp staff for the summer season. Interviews will be conducted in February. If  you are interested in applying please complete a Recreation Division employment application and supplemental Day Camp questionnaire.

Berkeley Day Camp staff focus on providing a healthy outdoor experience within a welcoming community atmosphere. They spend days with groups of children in Tilden Park and the Berkeley Marina hiking, swimming,canoing, making arts and crafts and playing sport and field games. Berkeley Day Camp  staff  insure a safe environment that helps each child develop social skills and appreciation for our local parks since the 1950’s. Berkeley Day Camp is looking for staff who can appreciate sharing the beauty of the outdoors while playing games, doing art projects, dressing up and singing with children. 

Camp includes recreational activities such as:  hiking, arts and crafts, non-traditional field games, cookouts, swimming, storytelling and singing. Weekly special events including, costumes,carnivals, science fairs and more! 

  Open Positions

Recreation Activity Leader
Must be 18 years or older
$17.33 per hour (to start)

Position Overview
As a Recreation Activity Leader you will be responsible for planning, organizing, and directing activities; assisting in planning and coordinating events; maintaining and enforcing safety procedures for participants and spectators.   

To qualify for this position you must have knowledge of equipment necessary for various recreational activities; rules and regulations related to team sports; basic principles and techniques of first aid; community recreation needs for all age groups. You must be able to motivate and provide encouragement for participation in recreation programs and team sports; identify recreation needs and plan and schedule recreational activities.  

Equivalent to graduation from high school and either two (2) years of progressively responsible experience leading a variety of athletic and recreation activities; or completion of major college coursework leading to a degree in recreation, physical education, group work or a closely related field may be substituted on a year-for-year basis; or extensive training and/or experience in a specialized field of endeavor such as dance, ceramics, photography or nature study which has occurred over a period of several years and has resulted in an acceptable level of expertise and the ability to impart knowledge of this field to others.  


Playground Leader Trainee
Must be 16 years or older
$12.19 per hour (to start)

Position Overview
This position is responsible for assisting in supervising and providing quality recreational experiences to younger participants at the playground or community center; assists higher level recreation personnel in conducting athletic and group recreational activities; assists in marking courts and diamonds and does simple maintenance of grounds and facilities; assists in the recreation center office, and helps with the issuing and collecting of supplies, and equipment, such as balls, bats, and gloves; make minor repairs to equipment, such as repairing nets and inflating balls; answers the telephone and gives information on the schedule of activities; performs related work as required.   

To qualify for this position you must be sixteen years or older and must have completed sophomore year of high school. You must have some experience as a participant in a variety of recreational activities, and a willingness to work with children and teens.  

 Application Process 

The City is now accepting applications for summer jobs. If you would like to be considered for open jobs you must: 

  • Download an application for any current job openings. A supplemental Questionnaire will be required for Echo/Tuolumne, Adventure Playground and Berkeley Day Camp positions  
  • Fill out application and complete supplemental (if applicable) and sign them.  
  • In the "Employment Record" portion of the City’s application, list all your paid or volunteer experience, as it applies to the job. Examples include: babysitting jobs, youth coaching experience, leadership camps, youth mentoring programs, etc. If you have any questions about what is appropriate, feel free to contact us.  
  • In the “Relevant licenses, certificates, or training” portion of the City’s application, list all relevant certificates that apply to the job. Examples include: First Aid and CPR, Lifeguard, WSI, etc.  
  • Attach all required certificates with your application. (Please refer under “job requirements” for required certificates for the position you are applying for with the City).

Candidates under serious consideration must provide proof of a recent negative T.B. test prior the beginning of the program or agree to get one as condition of employment. Federal law requires that prior to employment, applicants must furnish proof of identity and eligibility for employment in the United States. Proof may be furnished by various documents such as Social Security Card (original), birth certificate, driver’s license/CA I.D., passport, etc. 

Fingerprinting Requirement: California state law requires that all recreation employees and volunteers having direct contact, supervisory or disciplinary authority over minors be fingerprinted as a condition of employment. Candidates under serious consideration for hire will be referred for fingerprinting.

Candidates under the age of 18 will require a work permit.
