Mayor's Office

Welcome to the website of Mayor Tom Bates at the City of Berkeley, CA.

Berkeley - we’re an innovative city with economic vitality, healthy and safe neighborhoods, a clean and green environment, and we are the number one teen-healthy city in the state. We are nationally recognized as an environmental, solar, and green city with the number one public university in the country. To green our economy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in and around our community, I co-founded the East Bay Green Corridor Partnership with the mayors of Oakland, Emeryville and Richmond, the Chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley, and the Director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. We work closely with community partners, public agencies, the business community, neighboring cities and through my representation on planning bodies such as Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), Bay Conservation Development Commission (BCDC), and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) to meet our goals.

What's New: Do You Have the Most Sustainable Block? - Does Your Neighborhood Have Block Power? During the months of August and September 2010, single city blocks in Berkeley will form teams and compete with one another to earn the title: 'The City's Most Sustainable Block!'  Teams will collectively earn points for their positive contributions to their neighborhood's carbon footprint, environmental aesthetic, and social currency and share the results on-line via Go Game’s interactive game engine.  [more...]
