The City of Berkeley has more than 40 commissions, on which more than 350 residents volunteer as members. Members of boards and commissions provide an invaluable service to our City by advising the City Council on important policy matters. For more information, visit the City Clerk's web site.

July 30, 2010: Free Compost for Berkeley Residents
The City of Berkeley distributes free compost to Berkeley residents on the last Friday of the month from February to October (weather permitting) at the Adventure Playground parking lot. Residents should be prepared to show identification with their Berkeley address. Compost can be picked up starting at 8:00 AM and is available until it’s gone.
August 3, 2010 National Night Out
National Night Out is a great opportunity to come together with your community members and plan an activity such as cookouts, block parties, parades, exhibits, flashlight walks, contest, youth programs, and visits from the Berkeley Police Department and Fire Department.
August 5, 2010: Olympic Day at the San Pablo Park Community Center (Ages 5-12)
This is a fun recreational event. No track teams please. For more info, call 981-6641.
June 21 - August 13, 2010: Arts Discovery Camp (Ages 5-12)
Youth will increase awareness of different cultures through art, theater, dance, foods and nature exploration. We will also promote an appreciation for the environment by planting and harvesting from the garden. Many exciting field trips are included.
June 21-August 13, 2010: Summer Lunch Program
The California Department of Education Summer Food Program provides free meals to children, 18 and under, at nine locations in the City of Berkeley. Since school meals are not available during summer vacation, children can rely on the Summer Food Program to provide nutritious food that will assist them to grow to their full potential. Youth simply show up at the site during the time meals are being served, and enjoy good company and a delicious meal.

NEW! Suspect Arrested for Arson - City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) Property Crimes detectives have arrested a man responsible for a suspicious fire in front of Sam’s Market, 2312 Telegraph Avenue. This fire was one of nine (9) fires that had been deliberately set on city property in the South Campus area since Friday, July 16th. Detectives found Travis Eugene Churchill, 25 of Berkeley in People’s Park on July 20, 2010 and took him into custody without incident.
Members of BPD give of their time and energy to raise donations for Special Olympics - On Wednesday, June 23, 2010, members of the City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) participated in one of the many Special Olympics of Northern California fundraising events. 
That morning, a spirited group of BPD Officers and Parking Enforcement Officers, as well as some family members, took turns carrying the torch 2.2 miles on San Pablo Avenue from Ashby Avenue in Berkeley to the City of Albany border. Upon arriving in Albany, the BPD group learned that Albany PD had to reluctantly cancel their participation due to other matters. When the BPD group heard this news, someone in the group yelled, “Let’s go to El Cerrito!” There were cheers and the group continued to carry the “Torch of Hope” to the City of El Cerrito Police Department. The BPD team members raised over $5,500 for the torch run event.
Grand Opening of Innovative New Bike Station in Downtown Berkeley - The City of Berkeley, BART and its project partners will officially open an innovative new Bike Station on Tuesday, July 13, serving the Downtown Berkeley BART Station. The new bike station at 2208 Shattuck Avenue will nearly quadruple bike storage capacity at the station, making it easier than ever to bike it, park it and BART it for free.
