Office of Energy and Sustainable Development
Office of Energy and Sustainable Development

The Office of Energy & Sustainable Development was formed by a merger of the Energy Office, and the Sustainable Development Initiative of the Office of Economic Development to better coordinate functions.

Since the 1980s, the work of the two units has increased Berkeley's resource efficiency, reduced pollution, stimulated green building and green buying, and saved money for local businesses, residents and taxpayers.

Our Successes include:

  • Green retrofitting of many City buildings and traffic lights for an energy cost savings of over half a million dollars annually for Berkeley taxpayers;
  • Initiating sustainable development through City action plans, such as the Green Building Initiative;
  • Promoting sustainable-businesses through specialized business assistance, websites and marketing;
  • Incubating green building and development service programs, including Ask An Expert, which provides green building information to local businesses, contractors and homeowners.
  • Renewable energy projects, including the West Campus Swim Center's solar hot water system and the Berkeley Corporation Yard's solar electric system.

The Office of Energy and Sustainable Development has moved to the Planning Department.  Please note new phone numbers and address:  2120 Milvia Street, 2nd floor, Berkeley, CA 94704
