Berkeley, California (Wednesday, October 09, 2013) - The City of Berkeley invites the public to celebrate the restoration of the Ohlone Mural, which honors the first people of the area.

The 1,000 square-foot, mural covers four walls and depicts Ohlone creation stories. First painted in 1995 by Jean LaMarr, it was restored over the past year and a half by artist Miranda Bergman, who worked an inch at a time with a warm water washer to remove the old clouded coating to bring the mural back to life.

“Towards the completion of the project many tribal members came around, and shared with us their appreciation for the restoration,” said Bergman. “They told us stories, showed us pictures, and pointed out relatives on the wall. They spoke of current tribal affairs, such as the language reclamation work. Some prayed and stayed awhile in the powerful glow of the mural re-enlivened.”

The celebration on Saturday, October 12, 2013 will begin at 11:30 am adjacent to the mural, which is at the Ohlone Greenway Park on Hearst between Milvia and Bonita in Berkeley, California.

The onsite celebration will include distinguished speakers and a blessing given in the Muwekma Ohlone Chochenyo language by members of the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe. The event will be followed by a reception at the offices of Heyday Books at 1633 University Avenue, Berkeley, California. Malcolm Margolin, the Director of Heyday Books, who wrote a definitive book on the history and culture of the Ohlone Indians and will speak.

This Public Art Mural Restoration was funded by the City of Berkeley 1.5% for Public Art Program and overseen by the Berkeley Civic Arts Commission and staff of the Civic Arts Program and the Parks, Recreation and Waterfront Department.
