Berkeley, California (Thursday, November 04, 2010) - A working smoke alarm more than doubles a person's chances of surviving a home fire. Daylight savings time ends Sunday, November 7, 2010 at 2:00 am. The Berkeley Fire Department encourages you to change the batteries in your smoke al.arms and carbon monoxide detectors when you set your clocks back this weekend.  These devices save lives only when the batteries are working!

More than 90 percent of homes in the United States have smoke alarms, but it is estimated that one-third have worn-out or missing batteries.  The Fire Department recommends that you test your batteries every month and change them every year.
