Berkeley, California (Wednesday, September 29, 2010) - The City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) will be holding another Driving Under the Influence (DUI) checkpoint tonight, Wednesday, September 29, 2010.

The checkpoint will be held on Alcatraz Avenue between Adeline Street and Dover Street in South Berkeley. Participating Officers will begin operations at 8:00 p.m. and staff the checkpoint until approximately 2:00 a.m. Funding for this checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Acting Sergeant Jennifer Coats of the BPD Traffic Bureau said, “It is imperative that we continue to educate the public about just how dangerous driving drunk can be.” She went on to say, “We’ll make every effort to identify and arrest those who choose to drive impaired.”

In 2008, 30% of all traffic fatalities were alcohol impaired driving fatalities (includes all fatalities involving a driver or motorcycle operator with a BAC of .08 or greater) according to Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).

The message of this checkpoint is clear:

Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest.DUI

The Berkeley Police Department also urges the community to help keep our roadways safe by calling 9-1-1 or (510) 981-5911 from your cell phone to report suspected drunk drivers.
