Phone Calls Lead to Arrest

Berkeley, California (Monday, December 11, 2006) - Berkeley Police Robbery Detectives want to thank community members who called in with information leading to the identity and subsequent arrest of Julio Saca, 26 year old El Cerrito resident for the November 5, 2006 ATM robbery at the Shattuck Ave. Bank of America.

During the November 5th robbery, Saca made threats to shoot the victim if he did not comply with his demands. Due to the threats that were made, BPD Investigators made public the above right photo. BPD received about eight-phone calls with information, which resulted in Saca’s arrest on December 1, by Berkeley Police Officer Kevin Neff.

In this particular robbery, the victim “did the right thing” by complying with the suspects demands. Officers want to share the following crime prevention tips with community members:

Always be alert to where you are.

Pay attention to others around you - are you being watched or targeted.

Use well lit streets and sidewalks were many persons are around or businesses are open.

Occasionally look behind you.

Do not carry large sums of money or unused credit cards and identification.

Do not resist a robber - do as asked and follow the instructions given.

During the month of October 2006 there were 63 reported robberies here in Berkeley. That was almost double of the number we receive on a normal month. There is good news to share though; multiple arrests of separate robbery suspects were made last month. In one case, the person arrested by Berkeley Officers is responsible for 8-10 pedestrian robberies alone.

There are more crime prevention tips available on the Berkeley Police Department website. Please contact Officer Ed Galvan, BPD Public Information Officer, at (510) 981-5752, for additional information.
