A WORD ABOUT THE

ADDISON STREET ARTS DISTRICT

The Addison Street Arts District is the lynchpin of Berkeley's downtown revitalization effort. The District was developed through a collaborative partnership of arts and cultural organizations, private developers, and the City of Berkeley. It contains a vibrant melange of arts groups and businesses, creating a critical mass that defines the Arts District. The Addison Street Window Gallery, a cooperative effort between the Civic Arts Commission and the community, is in its 12th year of exhibitions and continually features the visual art of local Bay Area artists. Performing arts groups such as The Berkeley Rep and Aurora Theater have successfully established themselves in the Arts District along with the acclaimed Jazzschool and the Capoeira Arts Cafe. As well, the Freight and Salvage will soon be building a new venue on Addison Street.

The District is now expanding beyond its original boundaries, with the proposed relocation to Downtown of the University's Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, the Judah Magnes Museum, the Shotgun Players, Central Works Theater and other cultural uses. The Arts District has effectively stimulated the revitalization of Downtown Berkeley, which is developing as an exciting urban arts center.

The Addison Street Arts District was awarded the grand prize in the Economic Development Programs category by the California Association of Local Economic Development (CALED) for 2001. This is in recognition of its role as a catalyst in revitalizing Downtown Berkeley and places the arts at the center of the vitality of the City.  See Press Release
