Berkeley Emergency Notification System

The Berkeley Emergency Notification System (BENS) is one of the tools that the City of Berkeley uses to communicate emergency information and instructions to the Berkeley community in the event of a threat to their life, health and/or safety.

Berkeley residents and businesses with listed AT&T “land line” telephone numbers have already been included in BENS. To increase the likelihood that you will receive emergency instructions, the City of Berkeley encourages all its residents and visitors to sign up to receive BENS alerts through their other contact devices, including:

  • Mobile phone
  • Unlisted phone
  • VoIP (Voice over Internet) phone
  • Digital phone (cable/broadband)
  • SMS text messaging
  • Email

Sign up or edit your account information on the BENS Signup page.

If you do not have internet access and need assistance in singing up, contact the Office of Emergency Services at (510) 981-5605 or 510-981-5544 (TTY/TDD). DO NOT use these numbers during an emergency – dial 911.

BENS is one of many emergency notification tools available to the Berkeley community. Community members should not rely exclusively on BENS for emergency information. Visit the Emergency Alerting page to learn more about additional systems in Berkeley, Alameda County and California, which may be used to share emergency information and instructions.
